The All-Night Vigil (Vsenoshchnoe bdenie), Op. 37, was written over a two-week period in January-February 1915 and first performed in Moscow a few weeks later in March. Broadly conceived, it is rooted in Russian Orthodox liturgy and makes use of three types of chant" znamenny, Greek, and Kiev chant, as well as five chant-influenced original "conscious counterfeits" by Rachmaninoff.
