English text
'Tis stangely true, we all confess,
That numbers sometimes charms possess;
While Harmony in Three is blended,
For Nine the Muses have contended;
But, as we no objection see,
Our fav'rite number Twelve shall be.
Twelve months we have in ev'ry year,
In each its pleasure, hope, and fear,
Tho' some, alas! are dark and dreary,
Yet many more are bright and cheery;
And as the Twelve so pass along,
We'll welcome each with wine and song.
While on its course the world doth haste,
Around the board let wine be passed.
Whene'er our number shall be shaken,
And one good soul to heav'n be taken,
Eleven shall their friendship test,
And bear the lifeless one to rest.
And when my dust to dust is flung,
Let o'er my grave a dirge be sung.
