General Information

Title: Surrexit pastor bonus
Composer: Samuel Scheidt
Lyricist:

Number of voices: 8vv   Voicing: SSAT.ATBB
Genre: SacredMotet

Language: Latin
Instruments: A cappella

First published: 1620 in Cantiones sacrae, p. 23
Description: A motet for Easter. Scheidt does not call for instruments for this collection, but clearly they are envisaged in this most braggadocio Venetian setting. The second bass part is unfeasibly low, and cannot be performed without instrumental reinforcement or replacement. It is possible to perform a simulacrum of the composer's intention by judicious leaping of the octaves.
