Io vorrei pur fuggir, crudel amore,
dal tuo giog[o] aspr[o] e grave,
e scioglier[e] il cor dall'empie tue catene.
Ma s'io dolc[e] e soave inganno
ordisc[o] a quella speme ogn'ora,
ch'a forza del tuo impir, legato il tiene,
così nel foll[e] error[e] mi vivo,
e parmi ch'ogni picciol bene
mi paghi di mill[e] onte, e mille pene.

English.png English translation

I would certainly like to escape, cruel lover,
your harsh and heavy yoke,
and free the heart from your wicked chains.
But, as I create tricks of my own to distract
myself from that hope, time and time again,
so that the heart is bound by your wickedness,
I end up living in foolish deception,
and any punily positive event seems to repay
a thousand affronts, and a thousand sorrows.
