The horizontal alphabetical line which appears in some categories and on some long pages is a Table of Contents for quick browsing. Simply click one of the letters to jump straight to the entries that begin with that letter.
This is very useful when browsing categories with a large number of items, such as the category page Category:SATB or the composer page Anonymous).
