Hard by a fountain, Damon sat complaining,
Of Daphne fair and her unkind disdaining,
And ever and anon, he sadly sighed.

Thus mourn’d the shepherd, all oppress’d with anguish.
“O cruel maid, for ever must I languish?”
“Fa la la la la la,” the nymph replied.
