A nobil mensa del celeste ardore,
che da due lumi amorosetti usciva
Sol io nodriv’il core
Che strett’in mille nodi
Più assai prigion che’n libertà gioiva.
E d’ogni mio dolore
e di mia prigionia ridev’Amore,
Ma se del mio duol gode almen mi faccia,
Suo prigionier fra l’amorose braccia.

An der edlen Tafel des himmlischen Feuers,
das aus zwei lieblichen Lichtern austrat,
nur nährte ich das Herz,
das, eingezwängt durch tausend Knoten,
das Gefängnis mehr als die Freiheit genoss.
Und über all meinen Schmerz
und meine Gefangenschaft lachte Amor,
Aber wenn er sich an meinem Schmerz erfreut, so mache er
mich wenigstens zu seinem Gefangenen in liebenden Armen.

At the noble table of the heavenly fire,
that issues from two lovely lights [the eyes],
did I only feed the heart
that, tied within thousand knots,
enjoyed its prison more than liberty.
And all my pains
and my captivity Amor laughed,

a captive in loving arms.
