German text
Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme,
der Wächter sehr hoch auf der Zinne.
Wachet auf, du Stadt Jerusalem!
Mitternacht heißt diese Stunde,
sie rufet uns mit hellem Munde:
Wo seid ihr, klugen Jungfrauen?
Wohlauf, der Bräutgam kömmt;
Steht auf, die Lampen nehmt!
Halleluja!
Macht euch bereit
zu der Hochzeit;
Herr Jesu, Gottes Sohn!
Hosianna!
Wir folgen all
zum Freudensaal
und halten mit das Abendmahl.
Gloria sei dir gesungen
mit Menschen- und mit Engelszungen,
mit Harfen und mit Zimbeln schön.
Von zwölf Perlen sind die Tore
an deiner Stadt; wir stehn im Chore
der Engel hoch im deinen Thron.
Kein Aug‘ hat je gespürt,
kein Ohr hat mehr gehört
solche Freude.
Des jauchzen wir
und singen dir
das Halleluja für und für.
English translation
Be awake! Listen, a voice calls,
the watchman calls out from the high wall.
Awake, at last, Jerusalem!
Midnight now, dark is the night sky,
the watchman shouts a loud and clear cry:
where are you, O you wise virgins?
Wake up, the bridegroom comes;
arise, your lamps aglow!
Alleluia!
Bring ev’ry thing
for the wedding;
to meet him now you all must go.
Zion hears the watchman singing,
her heart inside with joy is springing;
the call is clear to quickly rise.
Her Love comes from Heaven glorious,
both strong in grace, in truth victorious.
Her light grows bright, her star is high.
Come now, O blessed One,
Lord Jesus, God’s own Son!
Alleluia!
We enter; see the joyous board
prepared for supper with the Lord.
Gloria, O hear our singing
with saints’ and angels’ voices ringing,
with harps and joyous cymbals’ tone.
Of twelve pearls the shining portals,
into thy heav’n, with choir immortal
of angels high above thy throne.
No eye has yet observed
nor ear has ever heard
such rejoicing.
Most joyously
we sing to Thee
alleluia eternally.
