Voi ve n'andate al cielo, occhi beati e santi
Co'l vostro chiaro lume e con miei canti
Ed io che son di gelo,
senz'un conforto solo,
vorrei levarmi a volo,
ma struggendo mi torno in doglie e pianti.
Così facess'amore, occhi sereni voi!
Ché allor vedreste poi
quel che de' haver un ben pietoso core;
E se'l vostro veder voi non potete,
guardat'il mio ch'in voi chiuso tenete.

English translation

You look at the sky, blessed and holy eyes
With your clear light and with your songs
And I, who am frozen,
Without a single comfort,
I wish I could fly,
But languishing I return to pain and woe.
May love do so, you serene eyes! Then you would see
What a pityful heart must have;
And if you cannot see yours,
Look at mine, which you hold locked into yourself.
