Merge discussion

With some settings of Tantum ergo now being listed on the Pange lingua page, I wonder whether the former (Tantum ergo) page might be merged with the latter (Pange lingua) and a redirect from Tantum ergo to Pange lingua created. -- Chucktalk Giffen 00:31, 11 January 2008 (PST)

Sounds like a good idea to me! --Bobnotts talk 01:30, 11 January 2008 (PST)

I don't think it's a good idea. There are different liturgical uses for the Pange Lingua and Tantum Ergo even though the Tantum Ergo is part of the Pange Lingua text. When I need a Tantum Ergo for benediction, I'm not going to look under Pange Lingua. Similarly, when I'm looking for a Pange Lingua setting for Corpus Christi or something, I'm not going to want to sift through the Tantum Ergo settings. Plus, the settings on the Tantum Ergo page don't contain the rest of the Pange Lingua text. Please leave this as a separate page.--Jenny D 03:11, 20 January 2008 (PST)

Thanks for the feedback, Jenny. It would be fairly simple to separate the settings of just the Tantum Ergo from the settings of the entire Pange Lingua. Also, a redirect (or multiple redirects if necessary) could point from Tantum Ergo to Pange Lingua which would allow users to find the entire text easily. The redirect page could be categorised under "Text pages" so that users looking in that category would be able to find the text easily even though it would be on a page with the entire text, not just 2 stanzas. Settings could be labelled as to their appropriate liturgical usage on the text page and individual score pages. For these reasons, I still support the merger unless anyone has any further reasons to the contrary. --Bobnotts talk 06:32, 20 January 2008 (PST)
I agree with Rob and Chuck. The fact that some composers use different parts of the text does not warrant multiple pages for settings which essentially belong to the same text. Besides, the practice for psalm settings is the same: even if a composer chooses to work with only a selection of verses, the text link still refers to the entire psalm, as I think it should. joachim 18:56, 21 January 2008 (PST)
