Talk:Joy to the world (Lowell Mason)
The general information comment that this was "Published: Collection of Tunes (Thomas Hawkes, 1833)" is rather problematic - at present, there are four editions listed, of which three are linked to.
No indication is given as to which of these arrangements (if any) concurs with the version of this tune in Thomas Hawkes' A Collection of Tunes, if indeed the tune is in that collection.
It might be useful if the comment about Hawkes' Collection was associated with (a) specific edition(s), if it applies to any of the editions. I'll try to find the Hawkes version of this tune to compare with the editions, unless anyone knows the answer any quicker.

Just to add that in my 2nd ed of Holford's Voce di Melodia, the tune is titled "Comfort", attributed to Handel and set to the text "O the delights the heav'nly joys The glories of the place Where Jesus shed the brightest beams Of his e'er flowing grace (x4). - I believe the tune name 'Comfort' was common for this tune, in the early - mid 19th century at least. As the tune (be it a parody of Handel or an new [if somewhat derivative] work by someone else) does not seem to have appeared as a published psalm/hymn tune pre-1820, the HTI doesn't help on this one. There is a version in one of Charles Rider's (Manchester Sunday School) collections, as recorded on the Psalmody CD Nativity. The tune is given the name 'Comfort' in the notes to that recording, although I'm unsure whether Rider's collection named it thus. Cydonia 22:42, 27 November 2008 (UTC)

Composer discussion
Is Lowell Mason in fact the composer? In this case, a page for him must be created and this page moved to correct title. --CarlosTalk 13:46, 4 July 2008 (PDT)
- Händel is the composer. Mason took Händel's Messiah and arranged some of the melodies to the lyrics "Joy to the World". This makes Mason the arranger, but Händel is still the composer. --Kainhofer 13:05, 24 November 2008 (UTC)

Mergers
There is now a Joy to the world (Lowell Mason) as well as Joy to the world (Anonymous). The last is a page move from Sounding Joy (Anonymous), and gives the same link (to the christmassongbook.net site with three tunes: SOUNDING JOY, ALLEGAN and ANTIOCH) as CPDL #1717. I think the ANTIOCH versions at least should be merged; maybe first to this, which has a longer page history, then moved back to Joy to the world (Lowell Mason), which seems more correct to me. I think it would be sensible to merge. There is certainly doubt as to whether Lowell Mason arranged a tune by Handel, or actually wrote it in a Handelian style. It doesn't quite feel authentic Handel, somehow.Jamesgibb 10:17, 3 September 2010 (UTC)
