Singet frisch und wohlgemut!
Lobet Gott das höchste Gut,
der so große Wunder tut
und schickt uns seinen lieben Sohn auf Erden,
daß wir durch ihn sollen selig werden.
Eia! Eia!
Eine Magd gebar uns Gott,
wie es seine große Gnad
gewollt hat.
Heute uns erschienen ist
der Herre Christ,
Immanuel,
der uns selig macht und führt aus Tod und Höll.
II
Kinder, singet alle gleich,
lobet Gott vom Himmelreich;
unser Not hat er erkannt
und seinen lieben Sohn gesandt
von oben,
daß wir ihn auf Erden sollen loben.
Eia! Eia!
Loben wir mit Lieb und Dank,
singen einen neuen Gesang
dem Herren.
Preisen ihn von Herzensgrund
mit gleichem Mund
und Hoffen frei,
daß ihm unser Dienst ein Wohlgefallen sei.
III
Schaut die lieben Engel an
und tut, wie sie han getan,
singt mit ihn’n das schöne Lied
von Gottes Gnad und neuem Fried mit Schallen
und habt dran ein herzlichs Wohlgefallen.
Eia! Eia!
Wünschet Glück dem Christkindlein,
sprechet alzugleich in ein’m
mit Freuden:
„Ehre sei Gott
in der Höh,
auf Erden Fried
und große Freud
wiederfahre allen bis in Ewigkeit.“
English translation
I
Sing out loud and joyfully!
Praise to God, our Gift is He,
whose great wonders we have seen,
who sent His Son to us on Earth to teach us,
that by this great Gift salvation reach us.
Ah! Ah!
See, a maid has borne our God ,
just as by His grace He had
intended.
And today has come the Christ,
the blessed Christ,
Immanuel,
He who blesses us and saves from death and Hell.
II
Children, sing together, all,
praise to God in Heaven’s hall;
He knows all our sorrows here
and sent to us His own Son dear
from heaven,
that from Earth all praise to Him be given.
Ah! Ah!
Praise and thank we Him in love,
sing loudly a joyous new song
to heaven.
Praise we God with all our heart,
with one voice, one art
and hopefully
that our praise to Him may pleasing be.
III
Hear the angels sweetly sing;
do as they to make heav’n ring,
sing with them the sweetest song,
may our new peace and God’s rich grace be ringing;
may your song bring joy to you in singing.
Ah! Ah!
May the new-born Child be blessed;
all together we express
our gladness:
“Glory to God
in the highest
and on Earth
may peace and joy
and good will to all be now and evermore.”
