O faccia d'una luna stralucente!
Tienimi a mente, gioia mia bella,
Guardam'un poc'a me, fa mi contento.
English translation
Oh those eyes my lover** (errata "heifer* of mine"), those golden eyelashes!
Oh resplendent as the face of the moon!
Keep me in mind, my fair delight,
Cast your eyes on me, do please me.
(* Such heartfelt kind of appreciation, comparing the beloved one to the most prized elements of rural life, was quite frequent in those days!) (** The translation "Heifer" is wrong. In ancient italian "manza" = "amanza" = "amata" = engl. "lover")
