French text Musiciens qui chantez à plaisir, Qui gringotez, refringotez la note. Prenez un ton plus doux, Et à loisir, Signifiant ce que le chant dénote, Accordez-vous, ainsi que la linote Qui prend plaisir en son chant gracieux. Soyez experts des oreilles et des yeux, Ou autrement il vaudrait mieux vous taire. Et je vous prie,que vous soyez soigneux De ne chanter, que vous n'avez à boire.

German text Musikanten, die ihr froh uns singt, und tiriliert und jubiliert, ja jubiliert nach Noten: o sorgt, dass euer Sang auch lieblich klingt, dem Sinn gemäß, wie er im Lied geboten. Ein Beispiel nehmt am Vöglein in den Zweigen, das sich erfreut an seinem schlichten Sang; mit off'nem Ohr achtet stets auf den Klang! Im andern Fall ich Schweigen euch empfehle. Doch bitt' ich sehr euch: sorget nur allezeit, dass nie ihr singt, wenn trocken eure Kehle!

English translation Ye singers all, both great and small, Who tear your throats with screaming notes, Give o'er, give o'er in pity. With softer strain, begin again; That we may find, if so inclined, The meaning of your ditty. Sing sweet and clear, like yonder nightingale, Whose love-sick note is heard along the vale. Mark well the time, yet not with too much violence; Keep true the tune, or better far, keep silence; Nor let this golden rule unheeded pass, "No wise man singeth with an empty glass."
