Introduzione
Già trafitto in duro legno
dall'indegno popol rio
la grand'alma, un uomo Dio,
va, sul Golgota, a spirar.
Voi che a Lui fedeli siete
non perdete, o Dio, i momenti;

II. Oggi, sarai con me in Paradiso
Quando morte, coll'orrido artiglio,
la mia vita a predare venga,
deh, Signor, ti sovvenga di me.

Tu mi assisti nel fiero periglio
e deposta la squallida salma,
venga l'alma a regnar con te.
Tu mi assisti nel fiero periglio
e deposta la squallida salma,
venga l'alma a regnar con te.

III. Donna, ecco tuo figlio. Figlio, ecco tua madre
Volgi, deh, volgi a me il tuo sguardo,
madre pietosa, poichè amorosa
me qual tuo figlio devi guidar.

lasc'io d'amar, lasc'io d'amar.

IV. Dio mio!
potrotti abbandonare? Piuttosto, o Dio, morire.
No, non più peccar, peccar non più!

V. Ho sete!

Insensibile in mezzo a tanto duolo,

I. Introduction
Lo! upon the cross suspended,
to appease a God offended
our Redeemer, the Word incarnate,
gives on Calvary love for hate!

Come all ye faithful, in Him confiding
Harken, harken to His words when dying!
Heav'nly love lo mortals testifying!
Hear oh! hear ye! and meditate.

I. Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do!
Thousands of sins oppress me!
Guilty I must confess me!
And all, o Lord! Thou knowest,
yet on me grace bestowest,

in thy allbounteous us mercy,
to look to Thee above,
and humbly hope for pardon,
in Thy neverending love.

Ah! when I ponder,
on the words of thy prayer.
I pause in wonder
at the love that could spare!
Then do I fell and know,
I may be pardoned too.

II. Verily I say unto thee, this day shalt thou be with me in Paradise!
When in death's cold embrace I shall linger,
when I shrink at his stern icy finger,
When the fair dreams of life are all ending
fleeting time in Eternity blending.

Then o Lord! be thou mindful of me!
When I traverse the path dark and dreary,
By thine aid I no more shall be weary,
Till in glory is my soul with thee!

III. Woman, behold thy Son! Son, behold thy Mother!
Ah! who can tell all her anguish,
as she beheld him, suffer and languish,
Yet with a love far above that of earth,
He gave his thoughts to her who gave him birth!

Let love divine our hearts ever guiding,
deep in our souls be ever abiding!
Nor be one instant,
cold or inconstant,
Jesus to Thee!

IV. My God! My God, why hast thou forsaken me?
Can the Almighty Father leave thee in pain and torment?
Art thou forsaken!
A blest Redeemer dies for love of sinful men!
And can I a guilty creature,
Ah I can I lo sinful pleasures fly!
can I thy will ignore!
No! rather let me die,
and sin no more!

V. I thirst!
When to the lily fair, purest of flowers
heav'n at decline of day fresh dew denies
sadly it's drooping leaves pine for the showers
Ah! in the sun's hot ray. Ah! it withers and dies.

With untold misery
torment and anguish
thirsted upon the cross
our Savior dear!

Where is the heart so cold,
can see him languish
and, for his agony, deny a tear?

VI. It is finished!
God's high purpose is now accomplished!
Christ's strong arm alone could save us,
he by death, in mercy gave us
pow'r to conquer death and hell!

He who still in guilt and sorrow,
scorns the Savior's invitation,
and despises. His salvation,
cannot hope with him to dwell!

VII. Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit
Jesus bent his head and cried with loud voice,
yielded up the ghost.
So Jesus died!
Behold a darkness fell upon the face of all the land!
And mighty rocks asunder broke,
rent was the sacred veil!
The universe in wonder paused!
Bemoaning its dead Lord!

So Jesus died! Even stones could not be cold to so much sorrow.
He left a name that will for ages endure!
The man of sorrow!
We who from sin
have rescued been,
Let us with one accord
Adore our blessed Lord!
