German text Zierlich ist des Vogels Tritt im Schnee, Wenn er wandelt auf des Berges Höh: Ha-la-li: Zierlicher schreibt Liebchens liebe Hand, Schreibt ein Brieflein mir ins ferne Land'. In die Lüfte hoch ein Reiher steigt, Dahin weder Pfeil noch Kugel fleugt: Ha-la-li: Tausendmal so hoch and so geschwind Die Gedanken treuer Liebe sind.

English translation Dainty is the bird’s footprint on snow, When to mountains high its wand’rings go. Ha-la lee: Daintier yet my sweetheart’s lovely hand penning notes to me in far-off land. The heron climbs high into the sky, Neither shell nor arrow flies as high. Ha-la-lee. Speedier and higher still by far The sweet thoughts and dreams of true love are.
