Il dì che di pallor la faccia tinse
e che di bruna veste
il sol coverse il bel carro lucente,
sì gran pietà del suo fattor lo strinse:
la Madre afflitta e mesta
ch'a l'orrendo spettacolo presente,
vide il Figlio innocente
dalle mani, da' piedi, e dalla fronte
versar vermiglio fonte,
da ferro di soverchio alto dolore;
sentì passarsi acerbamente il core.

English.png English translation

The day that his pale face tinted
and clad itself in dark garb,
the sun covered its beautiful shining chariot,
such great pity for its creator took hold of it:
The Mother, afflicted and sad,
who at the horrid spectacle presented,
witnessed her innocent Son,
from whom his hands, his feet and brow
pour out vermillian founts
from the iron, in unbridled pain;
She felt her heart bitingly pierced.
