German text Herr, schicke, was du wilt, Ein Liebes oder ein Leides! Ich bin vergnügt, daß beides Aus deinen Händen quillt. Wollest mit Freuden Und wollest mit Leiden Uns nicht überschütten! Doch in der Mitten Liegt holdes Bescheiden.

English translation Lord, grant us what You will of joy or of sorrow! I am content that both flow from Your own hands and will. Lord, not with gladness and neither with sadness would You overwhelm us! Midway between them, a lovely proportion.
