Biography
Dr. Henrique Coe is a Brazilian and Canadian composer and music educator.
In 2017, Henrique composed three pieces for the Dedication of the Montréal Cathedral in Canada, and his piece “Symphonic Ave Maris Stella” was premiered by the Orquestra Filarmônica de Minas Gerais in Brazil. Also in 2017, his piece “Defend Us in Battle” was premiered in Canada by the Windsor Symphony Youth Orchestra, and he had two world premieres in Portugal.
Henrique did his doctoral degree in composition at the University of Toronto (Canada), his master’s degree in composition at Université de Montréal (Canada), and his music education degree at Conservatório Brasileiro de Música (Brazil), as well as a management degree at Université Aix-Marseille III (France). He was composer-in-residence for a few ensembles at the Université de Montréal and at the University of Toronto from 2013 to 2016. At the University of Toronto, Henrique was also a Teaching Assistant in Music Theory I from 2015 to 2017 and in Music Skills I in 2018. Since 2019, he has been teaching music at a French Catholic school in Toronto, where he developed a method of music education that became known as “The Coe Method”.
As a performer, Henrique played saxophone with the Orquestra Sinfônica Brasileira Jovem and flute with the Coral Arquidiocesano de Niterói (Brazil). He developed his music skills at the symphonic band of the Salesian school in Niterói. Henrique was also the first conductor of the youth choir Pequenos Cantores de São Judas Tadeu in Niterói. He sang Gregorian chant in the schola cantorum of Saint Irénée parish in Montréal and of Holy Family parish (the Oratory of St. Philip Neri) in Toronto. Since 2020, he has been singing for the Brébeuf Virtual Choir, formed by singers who have attended the Sacred Music Symposium in Los Angeles, and he has also edited some recordings for this choir.
