German text
1. Es ist ein Ros entsprungen
aus einer Wurzel zart,
wie uns die Alten sungen,
von Jesse kam die Art
und hat ein Blümlein bracht
mitten im kalten Winter,
wohl zu der halben Nacht.
(katholic, Köln 1599)
2. Das Röslein, das ich meine,
davon Jesaia sagt,
ist Maria die reine,
die uns das Blümlein bracht'.
Aus Gottes ew'gem Rat
hat sie ein Kind geboren
und blieb ein reine Magd.
(lutheran, Praetorius 1609)
2. Das Röslein, das ich meine,
davon Jesaia sagt,
hat uns gebracht alleine
Marie die reine Magd.
Aus Gottes ew'gem Rat
hat sie ein Kind geboren
wohl zu der halben Nacht.
(Layritz, 1844)
3. Das Blümelein so kleine,
das duftet uns so süß,
mit seinem hellen Scheine
vertreibt's die Finsternis:
Wahr' Mensch und wahrer Gott,
hilft uns aus allem Leide,
rettet von Sünd und Tod.
English text
- 1. Lo, how a Rose e’er blooming from tender stem hath sprung!
- Of Jesse’s lineage coming, as men of old have sung.
- It came, a floweret bright, amid the cold of winter,
- When half spent was the night.
- 2. Isaiah ’twas foretold it, the Rose I have in mind;
- With Mary we behold it, the virgin mother kind.
- To show God’s love aright, she bore to men a Savior,
- When half spent was the night.
- 3. The shepherds heard the story proclaimed by angels bright,
- How Christ, the Lord of glory was born on earth this night.
- To Bethlehem they sped and in the manger found Him,
- As angel heralds said.
- 4. This Flower, whose fragrance tender with sweetness fills the air,
- Dispels with glorious splendor the darkness everywhere;
- True Man, yet very God, from sin and death He saves us,
- And lightens every load.
- 5. O Savior, Child of Mary, who felt our human woe,
- O Savior, King of glory, who dost our weakness know;
- Bring us at length we pray, to the bright courts of Heaven,
- And to the endless day!
English text
A great and mighty wonder, a full and holy cure:
The virgin bears the Infant with virgin honour pure!
- Repeat the hymn again: To God on high be glory
- and peace on earth to men!
The Word becomes incarnate and yet remains on high,
and cherubim sing anthems to shepherds from the sky.
While thus they sing your Monarch, those bright angelic bands,
rejoice, ye vales and mountains, ye oceans, clap your hands.
Since all He comes to ransom, by all be He adored,
the Infant born in Bethl'em, the Saviour and the Lord.
And idol forms shall perish, and error shall decay,
and Christ shall wield His sceptre, our Lord and God for aye.
Dutch text
- 1. Er is een roos ontsprongen, uit ene wortelstam,
- die lijk ons d'ouden zongen, uit Jesse 't leven nam.
- Nu heeft zij bloem gebracht, in 't midden van de winter,
- ach midden in de nacht.
- 2. O rozenstruik Maria, o alderpuurste maagd,
