Original text and translations

German.png German text

1. Wenn meine Mutter hexen könnt’,
Da müßt’ sie mit dem Regiment
Nach Frankreich, überall mit hin,
Und wär’ die Marketenderin.

2. Im Lager wohl um Mitternacht,
Wenn niemand auf ist als die Wacht
Und alles schnarchet, Ross und Mann,
Vor meiner Trommel säß’ ich dann:

3. Die Trommel müßt’ ein Schüssel sein;
Und ein warmes Sauerkraut darein,
Die Schlegel, Messer und Gabel,
Ein‘ lange Wurst der Sabel,

4. Mein Tschako wär ein Humpen gut,
Den füll’ ich mit Burgunderblut.
Und weil es mir am Lichte fehlt,
Da scheint der Mond in mein Gezelt;

5. Scheint er auch auf französisch herein,
Mir fällt doch meine Liebste ein:
Ach weh! Jetzt hat der Spass ein End‘!
Wenn nur meine Mutter hexen könnt’…

English.png English translation

1. I wish my ma were magical
and with the regiment and all
could come to France and serve us here
and be our own vivandière.

2. Then in the camp at midnight dark,
when no one wakes except the guard
and man and beast all snore in peace,
beside my drum I’d take a seat.

3. The drum my dinner bowl would be
With some tasty warm sauerkraut for me.
My drumsticks, my knife and fork,
my saber, a huge sausage.

4. My shako makes a tankard fine.
I’d fill it with Burgundy wine.
And though it is the dark of night,
the moonlight fills my tent with light.

5. Moonlight shines in the French way out here,
Makes me miss my sweetheart there.
Oh pain! Now all my fun must end.
If only my ma were magical…
