German.png German text

Ein Tännlein grünet wo,
Wer weiß, im Walde,
Ein Rosenstrauch, wer sagt,
In welchem Garten?
Sie sind erlesen schon,
Denk' es, o Seele,
Auf deinem Grab zu wurzeln
Und zu wachsen.

Zwei schwarze Rößlein weiden
Auf der Wiese,
Sie kehren heim zur Stadt
In muntren Sprüngen.
Sie werden schrittweis gehn
Mit deiner Leiche:
Vielleicht, vielleicht noch eh'
An ihren Hufen
Das Eisen los wird,
Das ich blitzen sehe!

English.png English translation

A fir tree grows, but where?,
Who knows? In woodland
A rosebush grows, who says
Where is that garden?
They have already chos’n,
reflect, O soul,
upon your grave to root and
grow and flower.

And two black horses grazing
in a meadow,
now home they go to town
in merry canter.
But at a walk their pace
to draw your coffin:
perhaps it happened that
one of their horseshoes
of iron had loosened
which I see there sparking!
