German text Früh, wann die Hähne krähn, Eh die Sternlein verschwinden, Muß ich am Herde stehn, Muß Feuer zünden. Schön ist der Flammen Schein, Es springen die Funken; Ich schaue so drein, In Leid versunken. Plötzlich, da kommt es mir, Treuloser Knabe, Daß ich die Nacht von dir Geträumet habe. Träne auf Träne dann Stürzet hernieder, So kommt der Tag heran— O ging' er wieder!

English translation Early at cocks’ first crow, while stars are still shining, I to the hearth must go to start fire burning. Lovely the flames bright glow with sparks all a-flying; and so I watch in woe, in woe and sighing. Then dud the thought come through, oh boyfriend so faithless, that all night long of you my dreams were endless. Tears and more tears, then come down my cheeks wending; thus does the day begin— would it were ending!
