Italian text Cedan l’antiche tue chiare vittorie Regina ancor del mond’altiera Roma E i grand’archi che ’l tempo anco non doma S’inchinin con le lor alte memorie. Cantin novi poemi e nov’historie De' tuoi novi trofei la nobil soma E cinga quella venerabil chioma Nove ghirlande di perpetue glorie. Mentre novella alma Vittoria intorno Di numero infinito il carro cinto Di cori e d’alme in bel trionfo mena. Gl’occhi son l’armi e più d’una catena Son le tue treccie, o fortunato giorno Ch’io venni e vidi e restai preso e vinto.

English translation Leave to the past your old illustrious victories, Haughty Rome, yet queen of all the world, And the grand arches that time has not yet weighed down with old memories. New poems and new histories are being sung of the noble burden of your fresh triumphs And around those venerable locks are New garlands celebrating your undying glory. While kindly stories surround Vittoria, In uncounted numbers about your chariot Choirs sing of your splendid triumph. Your eyes are weapons, and more than a chain Are your tresses. O fortunate day That I am able to come, to gaze on to be captured and to win.
