Cantiam la gloria d’Arno3, il fiume altero, Ch’a noi produsse questa nuova Dea, Gioia e stupor à Dori, à Galatea4. Cantiam di Flora, la superba mole, Onde s’honora Etruria, e’l Mar Tirreno. E frond’e fior verdeggia entr’il bel seno. Cantiam il Nome Glorioso e Divo E la felice prole5, e la virtute Ond’ogn’hor vien a noi gratia, e salute.

German translation Lasst uns besingen den Mincio mit seinen begrünten Ufern beim Erscheinen dieser schönen Morgenröte, der edlen, schönen, erhabenen Leonora. Lasst uns besingen den Ruhm des Arno, jenes erhabenen Flusses, der für uns hervorgebracht hat diese neue Göttin Freude und Bewunderung für Doris, für Galatea. Last uns besingen Flora, das prächtige Gebäude, wo sich beehren Etrurien und das Tyrrhenische Meer, und Blätter und Blüten grünen in seinem schönen Busen. Lasst uns besingen den ruhmreichen und göttlichen Namen und die glückliche Nachkommenschaft, und die Tugend, von der uns kommt Gnade und Heil. Translation by Gerhard Weydt

English translation Let us sing the Mincio with its green banks at the arriving of this beautiful Aurora, the gentle, graceful, sublime Leonora. Let us sing the glory of the Arno, this illustrious river, that has yielded to us this new goddess, joy and admiration for Doris, for Galatea. Let us sing Flora, that magnificent building, where Etruria and the Tyrrhenian Sea honour one another, and leaves and flowers flourish in the beautiful bay. Let us sing the glorious and godly name and the happy progeny, and the virtue from which always comes to us mercy and salvation. Translation by Gerhard Weydt

¹ Mincio: the river that runs through Mantova ² Leonora: The collection is dedicated to the duchess Leonora of Mantova ³ Arno: Leonora is, as also her name in the dedication indicates, an offspring of the Medici family of Florence, where the river Arno flows. ⁴ Dori, Galatea: Galatea is one of the Nereides (sea nymphs); Dori (Doris) is the name of their mother and also of one of her sisters. ⁵ prole: in the dedication Wert alludes to the birth of the two sons Francesco and Ferdinando.
