Biography

As a schoolboy I played the recorder and taught myself musical composition from books. I studied briefly at the Sydney Conservatorium under Ross Edwards and Anthony Gilbert. I trained as a primary school teacher in the 1970s before moving to The Sydney Morning Herald as a staff cartoonist in 1988. After thirteen years with the newspaper I retrained as a teacher in Adult Basic Education, spending a further fifteen years at Ultimo TAFE.

Over that whole period I composed short, light music for voices and recorders—including 250 rounds, some of which have been performed by The Song Company. I’ve also delivered dozens of cartooning workshops to schools in rural and city regions.
