Biography

A mention in Crétin’s déploration on the death of Johannes Ockeghem is suggestive but not further evidence points to Brumel being a student: the first Frenchman belonging to the 'Netherlandish School' was hired as a singer at Notre Dame de Chartres in 1483 and spent 1486-1492 at Geneva. In 1497 he surfaces at Laon and 1498-1500 at Notre Dame de Paris. In 1506 he succeeded Jacob Obrecht at the court of Ferrara until the chapel was disbanded in 1510, and subsequently worked at Faenza and Mantua, apparently in failing health. A report by Vincenzo Galilei placing Brumel in Rome in 1513 is given little weight, Galilei being born around 1520.
